Thanks for this work. I conducted an information ecosystem assessment in Oakland this past year, in collaboration with and using the methodology of LPostCollective & Internews. (You can see it at https://internews.org/resource/mas-informacion) That methodology is certainly in-depth and difficult to scale, but the experience also convinced me of the necessity of including audience surveys for any valuable assessment of local news. For instance, if we had only taken a cursory look at existing Spanish-language media outlets, we could have drawn the conclusion that there is a wealth of bilingual media in Oakland, with as many as four newspapers distributed in the area. However, through on-the-ground research and community surveys, we learned that those papers are difficult to find, lack original, timely, local, and relevant reporting, and are essentially unknown and unread among the vast majority of residents we spoke with.
